The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Programs mission is to enhance the health of children for generations to come through collaborative research that informs programs, policy, or practice. Inclusion of many perspectives can help ECHO achieve this goal by fostering scientific innovation, improving the quality of the research, and enhancing public trust. As such, the ECHO Program is committed to supporting a diverse biomedical research workforce, including individuals from groups identified in NOT-OD-20-031 - Notice of NIHs Interest in Diversity as underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences.
The ECHO Program Office is pleased to offer research supplements to promote diversity to ECHO Cohort grantees for 1) Graduate (Predoctoral) and Health Professional Students and 2) Individuals in Postdoctoral Training, including Clinical Fellows Training in Medical Fields. ECHO Program grantees should apply under the stipulations in PA-23-189 - Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed).The candidates proposed research experience must be an integral part of the approved, ongoing research of the parent award, and it must have the potential to contribute significantly to the research career development of the candidate. Supplements will be provided for up to two years, and recipients must comply with all ECHO Program policies.
Program Considerations: The ECHO Program Office expects organizations to engage in outreach and recruitment activities to encourage prospective candidates from diverse backgrounds, including individuals from underrepresented groups, to explore opportunities that may be available through this program. Consistent with existing NIH practices and applicable law: (1) organizations may not use the race, ethnicity, or sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, or transgender status) of an individual to select or approve a candidate or other award participant; and (2) NIH does not use the race, ethnicity, or sex of candidates or other award participants in the application review process or funding decisions. Applicant organizations and award recipients are encouraged to consult with their General Counsel to ensure that all applicable laws and regulations are being followed with respect to application submission and award implementation.

Applicants should be able to complete their analyses with minimal support from the ECHO Program Data Analysis Center (DAC). To facilitate such independent work, the DAC will train supported candidates on using ECHO Cohort Platform data, including the ECHO Cohort Analysis Workbench.
Eligibility: Candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral degree program toward completion of a terminal scientific degree (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D.), in Postdoctoral Training, or Internship, Residency or Clinical Fellowship Training programs in any of medical, nursing, or allied health topics. Faculty members are not eligible.
Principal Investigators from ECHO Cohort study sites, as well as ECHO Cohort cores and centers, may work with their organization to apply through the parent grant, under the stipulations in PA-23-189 - Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed). Applications for the Supplement may propose no more than one candidate per award. If the application is from an ECHO Cohort study site, award funding is contingent upon the parent award transitioning from the UG3 phase to the UH3 phase.

The Authorized Organizational Representative from eligible institutions must submit the application electronically to the NIH following the instructions in the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO): PA-23-189 - Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supp - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) or any of its subsequent reissues.
Please select "Revision" in the Type of Application field on the R&R Cover form, and include a Research Plan form, Career Development and Mentorship Plan, Project/Performance Site Locations form, Senior/Key Personnel Profile (Expanded) forms, Budget forms (e.g., R&R Budget, PHS 398 Training Budget), and R&R Other Project Information form.See Section IV. For funding consideration, applicants must include NOT-OD-25-042 in the Agency Routing Identifier field (Box 4.b) of the SF 424 (R&R) Form. The ECHO Program Office will not consider applications that fail to meet the terms of this Notice.There should be one candidate per application and the candidate's level of education must be included in the application. Candidates for supplement support must have an eRA Commons account at the time of application.
