Purpose

The purpose of this Request for Information (RFI) is to solicit input from the community that will inform the NIH about areas of scientific opportunity that would benefit from the unique research resources of the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. In particular, input is being sought to identify areas where the need for in-patient research beds exceeds availability.

Background

In fulfilling its mission to support biomedical research and training, the NIH often engages in partnerships to leverage its scientific capacity and resources. The NIH Clinical Center, as the largest biomedical research hospital in the world, is a unique local, regional, and national research resource. To ensure the Clinical Center is maximizing its potential to support the best possible science, the NIH Director is seeking input regarding needs and opportunities for inpatient clinical research resources.

Information Requested

Through this RFI, the NIH invites researchers in academia and industry, members of scientific or professional organizations, and other interested members of the public to provide comments from their perspective on areas of scientific opportunity that would benefit from access to in-patient research beds.

We welcome input that includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

The NIH plans to use the input received through this RFI to consider new partnerships for enhancing utilization of the Clinical Center to address research questions that can be most effectively and efficiently answered by interventions or procedures that require hospitalization in a unique, research-focused setting.
