Update: The following update relating to this announcement has been issued:

Issued by
National Institutes of Health (NIH), (http://www.nih.gov/)

The purpose of this notice is to provide information on the requirement for grant applicants seeking National Institutes of Health (NIH) Support for Conferences and Scientific Meetings (R13/U13) to submit their applications online to the NIH through Grants.gov (http://www.grants.gov/) using the SF424 Research and Research Related (R&R) form as of the December 15, 2005, submission date (as announced in http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-067.html).

The NIH recognizes the value of supporting high quality scientific meetings that are relevant to its scientific mission and to the public health. A scientific meeting is defined as a gathering, symposium, seminar, conference, workshop or any other organized, formal meeting where persons assemble to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate information or to explore or clarify a defined subject, problem, or area of knowledge. Support of such meetings is contingent on the fiscal and programmatic interests and priorities of the individual ICs, which are linked to the NIH Conference Grant website, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/r13/index.htm.

Applicants are required to present a letter from the appropriate NIH Institute/Center (IC) staff documenting advance permission to submit an R13 or U13 application.

NIH expects the NIH Support for Conferences and Scientific Meetings (R13/U13) funding opportunity announcement to be available in Grants.gov "Apply" soon, and a revision to the current announcement (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-03-176.html) will be published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts in the near future.

Applicants are encouraged to prepare themselves now to participate in electronic submission through Grants.gov.

PIs should work with their institutions to make sure they are registered in the NIH Commons.

See Preparing for Electronic Submission at http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/preparing.htm for more details.

Please direct questions regarding the Commons registration process to the NIH eRA Service Desk at phone: 301-402-7469/866-504-9552 (Toll Free); 301-451-5939 (TTY) business hours M-F 7am-8pm Eastern Standard Time.
