NIH ANNOUNCES MAY 2004 CONFERENCE ON THE HIPAA PRIVACY RULE AND 
RESEARCH

Continuing its efforts to educate the research community, the NIH is 
holding a one-day conference on May 26, 2004 entitled,  HIPAA and the 
Privacy Rule: One Year Into Privacy Rule Implementation.   The 
conference will examine how research has been affected by the 
implementation of the HIPAA Privacy Rule.  Topics to be covered 
include: clinical research, repositories and databases, health services 
research, mental health research, and public health activities.  
Speakers include officials from NIH, the HHS Office for Civil Rights, 
the HHS Office for Human Research Protections, the U.S. Food and Drug 
Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the 
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Agency for Healthcare 
Research and Quality, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health 
Services Administration.  There are no fees to attend this meeting, but 
participants must pay their own travel and lodging costs.  You need to
