OFFICE OF LABORATORY ANIMAL WELFARE NOTICE OF CONFERENCE ON INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE ISSUES IN FIELD BIOLOGY Release Date: May 4, 2000 NOTICE: OD-00-032 National Institutes of Health The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Office of Extramural Research, along with the Medical University of South Carolina and Benedict College, will cosponsor a conference on Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Issues in Field Biology, September 21-22, 2000 in Charleston, South Carolina. This meeting will focus on issues involving IACUC approval and monitoring of field biology studies. Speakers and discussion sessions at the meeting will educate IACUC members, institutional veterinarians, principal investigators, and research staff in the issues and controversies involving compliance with federal laws and regulations in research projects involving biological studies in the field. Topics will include applicable laws and regulations, protocol approval, ethics, voluntary guidelines by professional societies, endangered species, migratory birds, permitting issues, zoonotic diseases and occupational health programs, and techniques specific to field studies. Speakers will discuss issues involving mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish.
