Part 2. Full Text of Announcement

Section 1. Funding Opportunity Description:

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) supports research that builds the scientific foundation for nursing practice and policy across clinical and community settings, and advances the prevention, detection, and management of disease and disability. Drawing on nursing’s holistic perspective, NINR funds research that integrates factors at multiple levels, including social determinants of health, to identify their role in health, health improvement, and health inequities. NINR promotes research that improves the health of individuals, families, and populations in a variety of settings, translating science in order to maximize the impact of findings on practice and policy. Advancing health equity is an area of high priority.

National Institute on Aging (NIA)

NIA will accept applications for research projects in areas within the Institute's mission that includes genetic, biological, behavioral, social, and economic research on aging. In addition, NIA encourages applications on Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and AD Related Dementias (ADRD). The NIA website (https://www.nia.nih.gov/) provides additional information about the Institute mission and areas of research interest. For additional scientific program information and for pre-application guidance, a potential applicant is encouraged to contact the NIA Program Director (https://www.nia.nih.gov/research/research-divisions-contacts) whose portfolio covers the scientific topic of interest.

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)

NINDS seeks fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease. NINDS supports basic, translational, and clinical research within specifically defined areas of neuroscience. Research projects considered for funding by NINDS must fall within the scientific research mission of the Institute. Key components of research projects submitted to NINDS in response to this FOA include 1) to provide an outstanding opportunity for undergraduates to gain a solid understanding of rigorous scientific methodology within the particular field of study, 2) to provide strong mentorship and education in research as a career and 3) to provide education to students about the various career options they may wish to explore based on this research experience. NINDS also strongly urges PIs to engage students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives in their research project. While this funding opportunity accepts clinical trials, NINDS will only support applications proposing “mechanistic clinical trials or studies” (studying pathophysiology or mechanism of action of an intervention, but not safety or efficacy) or basic experimental studies with humans (BESH).

Please note the following definitions and restrictions for this funding announcement:

  • Clinical trials are research studies in which one or more human subjects are prospectively assigned to one or more interventions (which may include placebo or other control) to evaluate the effects of those interventions on health-related biomedical or behavioral outcomes. For this funding announcement, only the following types of clinical trials will be accepted:
    • Mechanistic trials, defined as studies designed to understand a biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention (i.e., HOW an intervention works, but not IF it works or is safe).
    • Basic Experimental Studies with Humans (BESH), defined as basic research studies involving humans that seek to understand the fundamental aspects of phenomena.
  • Clinical trials that seek to answer specific questions about safety, tolerability, clinical efficacy, effectiveness, clinical management, and/or implementation of pharmacologic, behavioral, biologic, surgical, or device (invasive or non-invasive) interventions, preventive, therapeutic, and services interventions will not be accepted under this FOA.

It is critical that applicants with research interests relevant to the NINDS mission contact the person listed under Agency Contacts (Section VII) to confirm that the proposed clinical trial meets NINDS’ requirements for this funding opportunity.

All other aspects of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) remain unchanged.

This notice is effective for the June 25, 2022 new application due date and subsequent due dates.
