Specific Areas of Research Interest for NINR:

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) supports research that advances the prevention, detection, and management of disease and disability for individuals and populations, and informs practice and policy across clinical and community settings. Drawing on nursing’s holistic, contextualized perspective, NINR funds observational, intervention, and implementation research that integrates factors at multiple levels, including social determinants of health, to identify their role in health, health improvement, and health inequities across many settings, including homes, schools, workplaces, clinics, justice settings, and the community.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, studies that evaluate the effectiveness of SBHCs in advancing the health of children from populations with health disparities and that:

  • Explore the capacity of SBHCs in promoting healthy behaviors and body weight, particularly as impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Examine mechanisms by which SBHCs can assess and reduce the impact of trauma, neglect, physical and emotional abuse, and bullying on children’s health and well-being
  • Attend to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of acute and chronic conditions and explore how social and environmental determinants contribute to the health condition
  • Develop and test new nurse-led models of care within SBHCs that incorporate social factors, social risks, and meet the needs and preferences of children who experience disparities
  • Explore care coordination strategies in partnership with other professionals that provide healthcare services and community resources, in order to enhance referrals and continuity of care
  • Evaluate the roles of school-based nurses in SBHCs and their impact on health outcomes

All other aspects of the FOA remain the same.
