Purpose

The purpose of this notice is to correct a typographical error in the Research Objectives section of two Requests for Applications: RFA-MH-11-020-(R01) and RFA-MH-11-021-(R21) - . Viral and Host Genetic Factors Regulating HIV-Associated CNS Disease.

The third paragraph of the Research Objectives section is corrected to read as follows: (the correction is identified in bold)

Discordant compartmentalized viral evolution in the CNS has also received considerable attention and is a critical area since the majority of currently available anti-retrovirals poorly penetrate the brain. Viral evolution in the brain may also have an impact on disease course. For example, recent studies using sophisticated phylogenetic analysis of HIV-Nef, gp120 and gp41 sequences from demented and non-demented cases showed a relationship between HIV-1 evolutionary patterns in the brain and different neuropathologies. Viral evolution in the CNS may also have adaptive significance since recent studies also demonstrated divergence between lymphoid and brain derived HIV-1 Nef genes.

All other aspects of these two funding opportunities remain unchanged.
