NOTICE OF LIMITED COMPETITION: NCMHD ENDOWMENT PROGRAM FOR INCREASING
RESEARCH AND TRAINING CAPACITY IN SECTION 736 HEALTH PROFESSIONS
SCHOOLS
Release Date: April 19, 2002
NOTICE: NOT-MD-02-004
National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD)
This is a notice of limited competition. The United States Congress
enacted Public Law 106-525 on November 22, 2000, which established the
National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD). The
law also authorized the establishment of an endowment program at
eligible Section 736 health professions schools. The Congress has
determined that the establishment of Federally supported endowment
funds is an appropriate method of building research and training
capacity in institutions that make significant investments in the
education and training of underrepresented minority and
socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals. This notification
specifically targets "Section 736 Institutions with currently funded
Programs of Excellence in Health Professions Education for
Underrepresented Minority Individuals". A description of such health
professions schools is provided in Section 736 of Title I of the Public
Health Service Act (42 U.S.C. 293).
Pursuant to P.L. 106-525, the "Minority Health and Health Disparities
Research and Education Act of 2000," Section 736 Institutions with net
endowment assets that are less than or equal to 50 percent of the
"national average" are eligible to apply for endowment fund support.
The purpose of the program is to facilitate capacity building for
minority health disparities research and other health disparities
research at such institutions.
