Purpose

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for institutional training programs for research careers in biomedical informatics and data science.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in the winter of 2016 with an expected application due date in the spring of 2016.

This FOA will utilize the T15 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators and institutions with expertise and insights into research training in biomedical informatics and data science to begin to consider applying for this FOA.

These informatics training programs meet a growing national need for investigators trained to bring computer science, data science and other information sciences to bear on problems in domains such as health care, public health, basic biomedical research, clinical and translational research and other health-related areas. The FOA will be open to both existing NLM training programs and new organizations that seek support for research training programs in biomedical informatics and data science. Applicants may request funds for pre-doctoral trainees and post-doctoral trainees.

While NLM’s research training programs are not part of the National Research Service Awards (NRSA) program, NLM's stipends, tuition support and most policies are similar to those of NRSA training programs. A competition for NLM's informatics training program awards is held every 5 years. The previous FOA for this program, issued in 2011, is available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/ep/trainingdirectors.html, along with current stipend levels and other information about NLM’s informatics training programs. However, interested parties should note that the previous announcement does not reflect the importance of biomedical data science, and is most useful as a summary of the kinds of information relevant for a full application.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
