Purpose

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, with the National Institute on Aging, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institute of Nursing Research, and National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications to plan and conduct low cost, pragmatic, randomized clinical trials that are integrated into existing clinical practice settings and/or leverage existing electronic patient care resources.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. 

The FOA is expected to be published in Fall 2013 with an expected application due date in Winter 2014.

This FOA will utilize the UH2/UH3 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into the conduct of clinical trials and appropriate clinical expertise to begin to consider applying for this new FOA. Trials proposed under this FOA should seek to answer questions that are of high impact to patients or healthcare providers, maintain the key elements of high quality clinical trials, and utilize existing patient care infrastructure and/or electronic resources. Interventions could be targeted at patients, healthcare providers, or healthcare delivery systems. Specific areas of research interest vary by participating research institute and prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the relevant program officer listed below to determine areas of clinical interest.
