National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/)

Purpose

Background

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) intend to issue a new Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit invitations to participate in the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN), a cooperative network of pediatric cardiovascular clinical research centers.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The FOA is expected to be published in June 2010 with an expected receipt date in October 2010.

The FOA will utilize the U10 mechanism. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into clinical pediatric cardiovascular research and study conduct to begin to consider applying for the new FOA.

The objectives of the PHN are to provide an infrastructure for multi-center collaborative clinical research; to evaluate medical, interventional, and surgical therapies; and to serve as a clinical trials training ground for fellows, junior faculty and research nurses. The results of Network studies are expected to be widely disseminated and to improve the scientific basis of care for affected individuals.

The emphasis will be on clinical studies of approximately 24-36 months in duration that will help to identify optimal therapies. A limited number of clinical trials of longer duration may be considered. The knowledge gained is expected to advance the development and application of novel therapies and treatment approaches.

Equipping pediatric cardiovascular researchers with the skills and experience needed to conduct multi-center clinical trials is essential to carry out the aims of the PHN. Funds for clinical research training have been included in this program. How the funds are used will be determined by the PHN leadership shortly after the start of funding under this FOA.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
