Purpose

Purpose

The purpose of this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is to support individuals with clinical doctoral degrees(MD, DO, ND, PharmD, DNP, Ph.D. in Nursing or Ph.D. in Genetic Counseling ) from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented groups, (NOT-OD-20-031) who wish either to expand their genomic competencies or to change their research careers by acquiring new genomics research knowledge or skills.

Background

Clinicians often need brief training experiences to be able to apply genomic medicine techniques and methods to their research. During these periods’ clinicians often require support to help them focus on non-clinical activities. NHGRI also recognizes that genomic medicine needs to address scientific questions of relevance to all populations, which can be furthered by having a clinical genomics workforce that reflects the populations they serve. Currently, the genomic medicine workforce lack of diversity limits the ability to reach this goal. NHGRI intends for this announcement to augment the other opportunities found at Funding to Promote Diversity in the Genomics Workforce.

Research Objectives

This NOSI provides individuals with clinical doctoral degrees from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented groups, with support for an intensive period of mentored genomics training to acquire new competencies in genomic medicine in response to NHGRI’s mission. Such experiences will afford individuals with clinical doctoral degrees protected time to: 1) enrich and expand their expertise and research programs through retooling in genomics medicine techniques; 2) redirect their research programs in new trajectories; or 3) catalyze research collaborations in new research directions. The intention of the initiative is to train clinicians in new or improved competencies in genomics medicine.
