Program Considerations

General statement of NHGRI funding priorities

NHGRI will support the development of resources, approaches, and technologies that will accelerate genomic research on the structure of genomes, the biology of genomes, and the biology of disease; that will use genomics to advance the science of medicine; and that will incorporate genomics to improve the effectiveness of healthcare. NHGRI will also support genomic research in several cross-cutting areas, including the ethical, legal and societal implications of genomics and genetics research, bioinformatics, technology development, and research training and career development.

In general, NHGRI supports studies that provide generalizable methods and knowledge. Applications for studies relevant only to a particular disease or organ system should be directed to the appropriate Institute or Center. Applications whose primary scientific objective is to understand a single biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention, will not be in scope for NHGRI. Approaches that are comprehensive across the genome or are generalizable across variants, tissues, diseases, or function may be in scope for NHGRI to the extent they address the research mission of NHGRI’s Extramural Divisions:

NHGRI areas of interest to PAR-19-372

Specific areas of interest to NHGRI include:[HL([2]

  • Identify population-level epigenomic patterns and signatures in various health disparity populations in relation to various social contexts (both positive and negative).
  • Identify pathways that are regulated by epigenomic changes in response to various stressors/protective factors in different health disparity populations.
  • Characterize and analyze interactions among socio-economic factors, environmental exposures, epigenetic modifications and the functional pathways and health outcomes among health disparity populations.
  • Identify novel early diagnostic epigenetic biomarkers with clinical utility to assess risk, development, and progression of various diseases in health disparity populations
  • Develop statistical or computational methods for integrating social determinants of health with epigenomics to predict health outcomes or disease risk.

NHGRI encourages investigators who plan to collect phenotype or environmental exposure data to use the standard protocols in the PhenX Toolkit (www.phenxtoolkit.org).

NHGRI strongly encourages potential applicants to contact program staff in the early stages of developing your application.
