National Institute of General Medical Sciences
The National Human Genome Research Institute is partnering with the
National Institute of General Medical Sciences to expand the MARC U-
STAR program to include an emphasis on the Human Genome Program. The
purpose of this initiative is to increase the number of
underrepresented minority students majoring in disciplines that are
relevant to the long-term goals of the Human Genome Project. This
initiative is targeted to students majoring in the quantitative
sciences and the behavioral and social sciences. The Human Genome
Project supplement will have two tracks: (1) Genomics Track for
students majoring in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering,
computer sciences, and related quantitative scientific disciplines such
as biostatistics and computational biology (quantitative sciences) and
(2) ELSI Track (ethical, legal and social implications of genomic and
genetic research) for students majoring in anthropology, economics,
psychology, sociology and other relevant behavioral and social science
disciplines. Competition will be limited to currently funded MARC U-
STAR grantees.
The first receipt date for this program will be February 1, 2002.
Thereafter, the annual receipt date for supplemental applications will
be November 1.

application procedures and format.
