OPPORTUNITY FOR OBTAINING THE SEQUENCE OF MOUSE DNA OF PARTICULARLY HIGH BIOMEDICAL INTEREST Release Date: January 25, 2001 NOTICE: NOT-HG-01-001 National Human Genome Research Institute The purpose of this Notice is to inform the scientific community that the NIH Mouse BAC Sequencing Program will be continued. The two next receipt dates are February 1 and April 1, 2001. In January 2000, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) initiated a program whereby scientists who could demonstrate that a BAC clone or contig (C57BL/6J strain only) was of high biomedical significance could request that the BAC(s) be sequenced free of charge to the requestor. This sequencing service is provided by several sequencing centers that have been funded through the NIH-supported Mouse Genome Sequencing Network (http://www.nhgri.nih.gov/About_NHGRI/Der/model_org.htm). The NIH has developed a web-based process for the submission and review of requests. This allows for a rapid response to requests. In general, once a request has been approved, it takes between 90-120 days for the sequencing centers to start generating data. All sequence data generated by the NIH- supported Mouse Genome Sequencing Network is subject to the "Bermuda Rules." The data are rapidly released into GenBank; unfinished data are submitted within 24 hours of generation of 2kb assemblies, and finished data as soon as completed. All data are deposited in GenBank. Details about the program and how to apply for access to this resource can be found at this website: http://www.nih.gov/science/models/mouse/mouseseq/index.html.
