Purpose

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)  intends to reissue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to solicit applications  for research infrastructure support in order to advance the field of NICHD-relevant population dynamics research. This research infrastructure is to be used to increase research impact, innovation, and productivity; support the development of early-stage investigators; and maximize the efficiency of research support.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The NOFO is expected to be published in Spring 2025 with an expected application due date in Summer 2025.

This NOFO will utilize the P2C activity code, which the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses to support multi-component research resource projects and centers that will enhance the capability of resources to serve biomedical and behavioral research. Details of the planned NOFO are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of population dynamics to begin to consider applying for this reissued NOFO.The Infrastructure for Population Dynamics Research Program (iPOP) supports research infrastructure at already productive population dynamics research centers that focus on research within the scientific scope of the NICHD Population Dynamics Branch (PDB). This scope includes research, research training and data collection in three areas:

  • Demography: The scientific study of human populations, including fertility, pregnancy outcomes, mortality and morbidity, migration, population distribution, population stratification, nuptiality, family demography, population growth and decline, and the causes and consequences of demographic change.
  • Population health: Research on how demographic, social, economic, institutional, geographic, and other factors influence human health, productivity, behavior, and development, with an emphasis on research using population-representative data and natural and policy experiments and using methods addressing selection and other sources of bias. Research at multiple levels of analysis, involving interdisciplinary perspectives, incorporating social determinants of health, and elucidating mechanisms leading to health disparities are encouraged.
  • Reproductive Health: Behavioral and social science research on family planning, infertility, and sexually transmitted infections.

Each iPOP application for the FY2026 competition is expected to include:

  • An administrative core and a development core that includes a seed grant program. They may also include a scientific/technical core.
  • A plan to enhance the external research community’s access to resources provided through this NOFO. The external community refers to population scientists with primary permanent appointments at institutions that do not have iPOP awards.
  • A plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP).
