Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to announce a virtual "informational session" to answer questions for potential applicants to Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research.

These awards are supplements to existing, active NIH grants and are intended to enhance the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting, mentoring, and supporting high school, undergraduate and graduate/clinical students, postbaccalaureate and post Masters individuals, postdoctoral researchers (including health professionals), and  investigators from diverse backgrounds, including individuals  from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research. See, e.g. Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity: NOT-OD-20-031.These supplements may also support principal investigators of research grants who are or become disabled and need additional support to accommodate their disability to continue to work on the research project.

Supplements are not grants. They are funds added to an investigator’s existing grant to support a specific activity. Investigators currently supported by active NIH grants may apply to support a candidate.

Program criteria can vary by institute. For those with NICHD grants who are interested in applying for these supplements to support candidates, it is strongly recommended they review the NICHD-specific guidance: NICHD Supplemental Program Guidance for Development of Diversity Supplement Applications 

Please note that this informational session will focus on providing general information and answering general questions about the diversity supplement funding mechanism at NICHD. Any questions regarding a specific funding opportunity should be directed to the Program Officer specified in the funding opportunity.
