The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is announcing the publication of a new Research Opportunity Announcement (ROA) using the other transaction authority (OTA) for the Post-Crash Emergency Medical Services Data Science Initiative. This Notice publicizes information about this ROA, and lists key dates for submitting full applications. The ROA (OTA-25-001) is available on the NICHD Pediatric Trauma and Critical Illness Branch website (under Highlights).
Application Due Date: December 6, 2024 by 5:00 PM EST. Late applications to this ROA will not be accepted.
In partnership with the NICHD, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Emergency Medical Services, and the NIH Office of Emergency Care Research, this Post-Crash Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Data Science Initiative seeks to study the complex and multifaceted aspects of post-crash EMS care as related to motor vehicle crash events and patient outcomes. It will develop a de-identified dataset/s of linked local EMS, crash report, health system and/or electronic health record data (and may include other unanticipated data sources). This novel and rich dataset/s will be utilized for the rich exploration and rigorous: 1) analysis and testing of associations between patient mortality, morbidity, and other outcomes with differing post-crash EMS care models, and 2) assessment, validation and/or strengthening of national-level National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) case definitions for improved accuracy and better understanding of associations between post-crash EMS care and health outcomes.
This Post-Crash EMS Data Science Initiative will be made utilizing OTA under Section 402(n) of the Public Health Service Act (PHSA), 42 U.S.C. 282(n) to advance understanding of our nations post-motor vehicle crash (post-crash) EMS care, and to respond to the public health threat of motor vehicle (traffic)-related injuries (MVI) which is a leading cause of death in the US.
Applications responsive to this ROA will undergo an objective internal scientific review assuring the assessment of scientific and technical merit of applications. Funding decisions will be based on the outcome of scientific review. It is anticipated that one OTA award will be made, however this may vary depending on funds available and applications received.
