Purpose

This Notice informs potential applicants that NICHD intends to publish a single Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for re-issue of the Contraceptive Research Centers Program. The establishment of these centers is Congressionally mandated (42 USC 285g-5).

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and appropriate projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in September 2017 with an expected application due date in December 2017.

This FOA will utilize the U54 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of contraceptive research development to begin to consider applying for this FOA.

Among the areas of research encouraged in this initiative are development of non-hormonal methods for male and female contraception and novel contraceptive devices and delivery systems. In addition to biomedical research, clinical and/or behavioral research will be encouraged but not required. Among the projects that will not be allowed for this FOA will be any involving modulation of the blood-testis or blood-epididymal barrier, or basic research projects. Additional guidance will be provided in the FOA.
