Purpose
NIH Research Plan on Rehabilitation: Moving the Field Forward has been published. Rehabilitation research explores the intricate biology of disabilities and looks for ways to help restore lost function and to help people with disabilities reach their full potential. This 5-year plan lays out priorities in medical rehabilitation research; will guide NIH support for rehabilitation medicine; and will benefit individuals with temporary or chronic limitations in physical, cognitive, or sensory function that require rehabilitation.
Six areas of rehabilitation research were identified as Opportunities, Needs, and Priorities:
1) rehabilitation across the lifespan,
2) family and community,
3) technology use and development,
4) research design and methodology,
5) translational science, and
6) building research capacity and infrastructure.
The research community is encouraged to submit applications addressing these areas using the Parent Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) or other published FOAs specific to the priorities of individual NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) within the field of rehabilitation. Please contact the IC contacts below for more information.
