COLLABORATIVE PEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE RESEARCH NETWORK
RELEASE DATE: May 2, 2003
NOTICE: NOT-HD-03-011
National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is
planning to publish a Request for Applications (RFA) for a Collaborative
Pediatric Critical Care Research Network. This notice is to alert potential
applicants so that they can begin to assemble their research teams to prepare
applications for this initiative.
The objective of the RFA will be to establish a network that provides the
infrastructure to perform clinical trials and descriptive studies in
pediatric critical care units. This network will promote the efficient
evaluation of existing and novel therapies for the treatment of acutely ill
children, adolescents, and infants (beyond the neonatal period). A
compelling need exists to establish a firm evidence base for critical care
pediatric medicine.
NICHD anticipates initially funding up to six clinical sites and a data
coordinating center for the first five years of this project. The
requirements for clinical sites will include adequate patient volume,
demonstrated capability to enroll subjects in clinical trials, presence of
appropriate multi-disciplinary teams, attention to appropriate outcome
measures, and scientific competence in areas related to critical care
medicine. Applicants for clinical site awards will be asked to propose an
investigation that the network might undertake. This proposal will be an
integral part of the application that the review committee will evaluate.
Requirements for the data coordinating center will include demonstrated
competence in managing clinical trials, knowledge and competence in data
sharing, storage and analysis, appreciation of regulatory and human subjects
issues, and familiarity with issues in pediatric critical care.
