Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to encourage research in NIGMS mission areas that focus on sex differences in biological processes and in disease etiology and outcomes.  For the purposes of this Notice, the term “sex” refers to a multidimensional biological construct based on anatomy, physiology, genetics, and hormones.

Historically research with animal and cell models predominantly has focused on a single sex, yet the research findings are often applied to the whole population (see, for example, the free e-learning course “Bench to Bedside: Integrating Sex and Gender to Improve Human Health”). NIGMS hopes to address this unmet research need through this Notice.

Examples of research topics that fall within the NIGMS mission could include, but are not limited to:

  • the development of computational and statistical methods to study the bases of sex differences,
  • research on the genetic, molecular and cellular bases of sex differences, particularly using research organisms and cell culture systems,
  • studies of sex differences in the clinical areas supported by NIGMS - anesthesiology and peri-operative pain; clinical pharmacology common to multiple drugs and treatments; and injury, critical illness, sepsis, and wound healing, and
  • studies of sex differences at multiple scales as part of the NIGMS research capacity building programs.
