Issued by

Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to inform applicants of the topic areas for the June 18, 2021 due date of the NIGMS funding opportunity announcement (FOA) PAR-20-296 “Modules for Enhancing Biomedical Research Workforce Training (R25 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed)”.

Background

All funding opportunity announcements for training grants supported by NIGMS contain the expectation that funded programs will promote “inclusive, safe and supportive scientific and training environments.” In this context, the word “safe” refers to several aspects of safety. Through this notice, NIGMS will support the development of training modules for the broader research training community to help catalyze changes in two distinct aspects of “safe” scientific, clinical, and research training environments.

Applicants must address one of the two topics below.

  1. The development of training modules that will catalyze changes in scientific, clinical, and research training environments such that they are optimized for productive learning and research - free from harassment, intimidation and discrimination - where everyone participating feels safe and is treated in a respectful and supportive manner. Applications must specify the skills and knowledge that will be gained by the audience and how the module will help the audience address the structures and ways of thinking that are barriers to success.
  1. The development of training modules that will help catalyze a strong culture of physical, chemical, and biological safety in scientific, clinical, and research training environments. Specifically, environments in which physical, chemical, and biological safety is prioritized and the core values and behaviors of leadership and the research and training communities emphasize safety over competing goals. Applications must specify the skills and knowledge that will be gained by the audience and how the module will help the audience address the structures and ways of thinking that are barriers to success.
