Purpose

The NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative includes the Student Training Core that is funded by the TL4-linked award and designed to provide opportunities for trainees to gain biomedical research training and skills, including hands-on experiences. Providing BUILD trainees with research experiences at partner institutions is an allowable activity under this Core; however, BUILD recipients have recently inquired about the allowability of specific travel-related costs for these trainees. Therefore, NIGMS is clarifying allowable costs for related expenses in this notice.

Clarification:
Trainee travel to attend domestic scientific meetings and workshops that the institution determines to be necessary for the BUILD trainee’s development and training experience is an allowable expense. Also allowable, are per diem and travel costs for BUILD trainees participating in summer research experiences at research partner institutions. Per diem and travel costs for the summer research experience, in accordance with institutional policies, are allowed.

Note: All summer research experiences for the BUILD program are expected to be 8 consecutive weeks in duration. Per diem expenses under the TL4 will be limited to TL4 trainees, and per diem expenses under the RL5 will be limited to RL5 participants.
