Purpose

The NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Initiative includes an Institutional Development Core that is funded by the UL1-linked award, and allows alteration and renovations of research training space as an approach to advancing transformative undergraduate research training and sustainable institutional capacity. NIGMS is clarifying post-award requirements pertaining to the timeframe in which obligations may be incurred and expenditures liquidated for alterations and renovations.

Clarification:
Previous BUILD guidance for alteration and renovation of research training space that should be expended within the two years of the project. This Notice serves to clarify that funding for alteration and renovation of research training space should be obligated within the two years of the project. (This is consistent with the NIH policies on reporting final expenditures found in Sections 8.6 and 10.9 of the NIH Grants Policy Statement.) Support for equipment and alteration/renovation costs are limited to Primary, Pipeline, and Graduate/Medical partner institutions.
