Purpose
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences supports the Congressionally-mandated Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program. The objective of the IDeA program is to enhance biomedical research at institutions in states that have had historically low NIH research funding. The IDeA program serves as a platform to provide research infrastructure and mentoring for junior investigators to obtain independent research funding from NIH and other funding agencies. The IDeA program currently supports three major programs: 1) the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3; 2) the IDeA Program Infrastructure for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR); and 3) the IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE).
IDeA investigators being funded through one of the IDeA initiatives are expected to apply for and receive independent research funding. Funding from the IDeA program will be adjusted or terminated when an investigator's new award overlaps or is significantly similar to the work described in the COBRE, IDeA-CTR or INBRE program. When submitting a new research grant application, the IDeA funded investigators should include a statement acknowledging IDeA program support and a plan for relinquishing that support if the proposed research overlaps or is similar to their IDeA project.
