National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)

Purpose

This notice extends the deadline for responses to NOT-GM-10-113 to January 15, 2011. This is a time-sensitive Request for Information (RFI) directed at obtaining input, electronically through a Web site to assist the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) in assessing the outcomes of its Large-Scale Collaborative Project Awards (Glue Grants) program.

This RFI is for planning purposes only and should not be construed as a solicitation for applications or an obligation of the part of the government.  The government will not pay for the preparation of any information submitted or for the government’s use of that information.

Background

In September 2009, NIGMS announced that it was not reissuing the funding opportunity announcement for our Large-Scale Collaborative Project Awards (Glue Grant) program, which has supported research teams tackling significant and complex problems that are beyond the means of any one research group. NIGMS is currently assessing the need for this type of support and how best to manage programs of such scope and magnitude.

As part of this effort, NIGMS is conducting an assessment of the glue grant program’s major outcomes and their impact. NIGMS is seeking your views through voluntary community input forms posted on the NIGMS Web site. The forms will ask about various aspects of the glue grant program as a whole and about specific glue grant projects, including:

Alliance for Cellular Signaling

Cell Migration Consortium

Consortium for Functional Glycomics

Inflammation and the Host Response to Injury

Lipid Metabolites and Pathways Strategy (LIPID MAPS) Consortium

To assure the broadest possible input, NIGMS is inviting scientists of all types from academia, industry, and government, representatives of scientific organization, and other interested parties, regardless of their affiliation with any of the glue grant awards, to provide responses through community input forms. You can read more about the assessment and access the forms at http://www.nigms.nih.gov/Initiatives/Collaborative/GlueGrants/OutcomeAssessment.
