Purpose
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (DMS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) plan to support research in mathematics and statistics related to mathematical biology research. Both agencies recognize the need for additional research at the boundary between the mathematical sciences and the life sciences. This competition is designed to encourage new collaborations at this interface, as well as to support existing ones. NIGMS and DMS anticipate making 15 to 20 awards totaling about $5 million, in fiscal year 2011. It is expected that each award will be between $100,000 to $400,000 (total costs) per year for a duration of three to five years. Applications should be submitted to NSF (Program Solicitation 10-579). Specific information concerning the application and review process is available at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10579/nsf10579.htm?org=DMS.
