This notice provides clarification about policies regarding allowable postdoctoral positions on SCORE SC1, SC2, and SC3 awards (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-08-026.html, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-08-027.html, and http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-08-028.html, respectively). Postdoctoral fellows may only be requested on SC1 awards, provided that: 1) the research proposed justifies the need for their particular expertise and 2) their participation in the proposed research project will further their professional career. It is also required that the postdoctoral fellow be employed in a research–rich environment in which he/she will have opportunity to be an independent thinker and to develop by participating in mentoring activities and interacting with other postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students, and research faculty. Postdoctoral fellows are not allowed on SC2 or SC3 awards.
Additionally, grantees of any of the SCORE programs referenced above are not eligible to apply for/receive Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (PA-08-190, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-08-190.html).
