Over the last decade, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and other Federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, have jointly conducted a number of competitions for funding of research in metabolic engineering. These agencies recognize the continued need for research to develop conceptual and technical approaches that will enhance the feasibility and utility of metabolic engineering. For this reason, these agencies are again conducting a funding initiative in this area. These agencies anticipate making around ten awards in fiscal year 2009 totaling up to $9 million over the life of the grants. It is expected that these awards will be for between $233,000 to $500,000 (total costs) per year and will typically be for three years. Specific information concerning the application and review process is available at http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf08588
