This is a revision of the Notice, NOT-GM-02-004, Administrative Supplements for the Study of Complex Biological Systems, issued May 14, 2002. Through the use of administrative supplements to grants funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), this initiative aims to (a) enhance NIGMS funded research on complex biological processes by bringing to bear approaches from the mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences; (b) recruit established experts from mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, and other quantitative disciplines into biomedical research; and (c) encourage non-traditional, cross-disciplinary collaborations.

This revision expands the eligibility criteria for collaborators. Under certain circumstances, experts who are already established in biomedical research may now qualify as collaborators.

More complete information can be found at http://www.nigms.nih.gov/funding/complex_supplements.html

Supplements are limited to NIGMS grantees working in fields where theoretical and quantitative approaches are not yet routine. Grants in areas where theoretical and quantitative approaches are already well established are not eligible for supplementation. These include areas such as population biology, bioinformatics, biophysics, biophysical chemistry, drug design, and structural biology.
