ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPLEMENTS FOR CURRICULAR IMPROVEMENT IN MARC U*STAR
INSTITUTIONS-PHASE I: REANNOUNCEMENT

RELEASE DATE: June 3, 2003

LETTER OF INTENT RECEIPT DATE: September 5, 2003

APPLICATION RECEIPT DATE: October 8, 2003

The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program reannounces the
availability of supplements to institutions funded by the Division of
Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) of the National Institute of
General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to support specific plans for
curriculum development/improvement in the quantitative sciences. The
use of computers and mathematical models/calculations in biology has
resulted in major conceptual and technical advances that allow the
study of complex biological systems. For example, the orderly
development of an organism requiring the coordination of activities of
several groups of cells and and/or genes in specific spatial and
temporal sequence is amenable to study using a computational approach.
Similarly, the elucidation of the informational units of the genomes
and their processed forms, because of the large numbers involved,
requires computational skills and mathematical/statistical skills.

The purpose of this initiative is to introduce/integrate in the pre-
MARC and MARC trainee science curriculum quantitative analytical
methods in the study of biological and biomedical phenomena. The long-
term goal of this initiative is to support specific plans for
curriculum development/improvement in the quantitative sciences to
enhance the academic preparedness of underrepresented minority students
in biomedical science fields.

This initiative will be implemented in two Phases. Phase I, the
subject of this Notice, is an institutional 12-month administrative
supplement to enable eligible MARC institutions to develop plans for
introducing/integrating the quantitative sciences into their biology
curricula. The second phase (Phase II), the subject of a later
announcement, will be a competing supplement to support the
implementation of the plans developed in Phase I.

Only institutions with a minimum of one year remaining on their MARC
U*STAR grants may submit the administrative supplements. These
supplements should be sent to Dr. Toliver at the address listed below.
More complete information can be found in the announcement for Phase I
supplements at http://www.nigms.nih.gov/minority/ustar_supp.html.

Prospective applicants are asked to submit a letter of intent to Dr.
Toliver (note address below). Although a letter of intent is not
required or binding, it allows NIGMS staff to estimate the potential
response and plan accordingly.

Written and telephone inquires are welcomed. They should be addressed
to:
