Joint DMS/NIGMS Initiative to Support Research in the Area of Mathematical Biology Release Date: May 30, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-GM-02-005 National Institute of General Medical Sciences (http://www.nigms.nih.gov) The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) and the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Science Foundation (DMS) plan to support research in mathematics and statistics related to mathematical biology research. Both agencies recognize the need for additional research at the boundary between the mathematical sciences and the life sciences. This competition is designed to encourage new collaborations at this interface, as well as to support existing ones. NIGMS and DMS anticipate making 20 to 25 awards totaling about $6 million, in each of fiscal years 2003 to 2005. It is expected that each award will be between $100,000 to $400,000 (total costs) per year and will be for four or five years. Specific information concerning the application and review process is available at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2002/nsf02125/nsf02125.htm.
