NIGMS REGIONAL WORKSHOPS ON WRITING GRANT APPLICATIONS FOR THE RISE, MARC AND 
BRIDGES PROGRAMS

National Institute of General Medical Sciences

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has 
scheduled grant writing workshops in six regions of the United States 
and Puerto Rico for the purpose of providing potential grantees with 
information about preparing applications for the Research Initiative 
for Scientific Enhancement (RISE), the Minority Access to Research 
Careers Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research Awards 
(MARC U*STAR), and the Bridges to the Future programs.  These workshops 
are open to the public, participants do not need to be grantees or 
applicants in order to attend.  The sessions are scheduled as follows:

Feb. 20 Greensboro, NC       Bennett College
Feb. 22 Atlanta, GA          Spelman College
Feb. 23 San Antonio, TX      Univ. of Texas, San Antonio
Mar. 2  New York, NY         Hunter College
Mar. 15 Ponce, Puerto Rico   Ponce Medical School
Mar. 20 Los Angeles, CA      Univ. of California, Los Angeles

The workshops will be conducted by NIGMS staff and by funded program 
directors in the RISE, MARC, and Bridges programs.

The regional meetings will provide information on the following:

Goals of the RISE, MARC, and Bridges programs:

Writing a competitive RISE, MARC U*STAR, or Bridges grant proposal 
including:
o  Institutional self-assessment
o  Elements of a successful application
o  Demonstrating institutional commitment
o  Preparing an evaluation plan

Review of NIH grants, including program-specific review criteria
Subcontracts and institutional agreements

Preparing a budget and budget justification

How funding decisions are made
