Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to announce that the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Fogarty International Center (FIC) are participating in the Belmont Forum’s Collaboration Research Action (CRA) on Climate, Environment and Health (CEH) (http://www.belmontforum.org/opportunities/). NIEHS and FIC will participate in-kind by providing information to NIH-funded investigators (https://projectreporter.nih.gov/) whose research aligns with the scope of the CEH CRA to enable collaborative opportunities with international partners to address topics of mutual interest.

The Belmont Forum, in collaboration with Future Earth, has recently released a new collaborative research action for transdisciplinary research which will improve understanding of the pathways between climate, environment and health to protect and promote human health and well-being in the face of climate challenges. See here for the Call for Proposals: https://www.belmontforum.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/CEH-CRA-call-text-1-updated-05.04.19.docx An Expression of Interest Form is required to be submitted by May 6, 2019. The full proposal is due July 23, 2019 and the Proposal Form will not be supplied unless an Expression of Interest Form has been submitted.

Thirteen institutions from nine countries have committed up to approximately $12M plus additional in-kind resources for this call. The call aims to support 10-12 projects of between three and four years duration. Participating U.S. Government agencies are: The National Science Foundation (NSF), The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Additional international and national entities may also join the call in various ways over the coming months.

It is envisioned that research supported under existing NIEHS and FIC funded awards can serve as a platform that can be expanded through additional trans-disciplinary, multi-national collaborations to contribute to the research scope of the Belmont Forum CRA, without altering the originally proposed, funded aims of the study.

NIEHS and FIC will provide information about this CRA to their investigators, particularly the NIH co-funded seven regional centers for Global Environmental and Occupational Health, to sensitize them to opportunities for participation in the Belmont Forum.

NIEHS may choose to support travel expenses for a limited number of existing grantees to attend meetings associated with the Belmont Forum to foster collaborations.

No specific funds are allocated to this CRA, and the NIEHS and FIC will not fund new proposals in this CRA.

This is a Notice of Information (NoI) only and does not constitute a commitment, implied or otherwise, that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), or the individual NIH Institutes and Centers, will take action in this matter. This is NOT a solicitation for proposals, applications, proposal abstracts or quotations. The purpose of this NoI is to disseminate knowledge and information on a program to enable collaborative opportunities with international partners to improve understanding of the pathways between climate, environment and health to protect and promote human health and well-being in the face of climate challenges.
