Purpose
The purpose of this notice is to provide additional clarification about the types of environmental exposures that are appropriate for RFA-ES-12-009, Environmental Influences on the Microbiome (R21), specifically regarding cigarette smoke.
Part 2. Section I. Objectives
Current Language:
Note: Dietary (including probiotics, breast milk and infant formula) or pharmaceutical exposures are not relevant to the mission of NIEHS. Applications focusing solely on these types of factors will not be considered responsive to the FOA, and will be returned without review.
Modified Language:
Note: Dietary (including probiotics, breast milk and infant formula), pharmaceutical exposures, and exposures occurring via active smoking are not relevant to the mission of NIEHS. Applications focusing solely on these types of factors will not be considered responsive to the FOA, and will be returned without review. Secondhand smoke is considered within the mission of NIEHS and would be an appropriate exposure for this FOA.
All other aspects of RFA-ES-12-009 remain unchanged.
