RELEASE DATE: July 8, 2003

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

Change In Review Policy For Program Project Grant (P01) Applications
The purpose of this announcement is to notify potential applicants for
Program Project Grants that effective immediately, NIEHS will no longer
be conducting site visits as part of the review of these applications.
Applicants for P01 support should submit complete applications
addressing all of the review criteria as stated in the NIEHS Guidelines
for submission of P01 applications. These guidelines are available at
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/dert/programs/p01.htm. Early communication
with NIEHS review staff should be considered to ensure submission of a
complete application.
Review procedures to be instituted for P01 applications will include
telephone contact by the Scientific Review Administrator (SRA) to the
Principal Investigator the night prior to the review meeting. The
purpose of this phone call will be to alert the Principal Investigator
of the need for additional material or information. Said material or
information should be made available to the reviewers prior to or
during the review meeting which will occur the following day. During
the review, a maximum of 60 minutes will be allotted for a
teleconference between the review committee and the Principal
Investigator and assembled co-investigators. The purpose of this
teleconference will be to allow the investigators interaction with the
committee and to answer questions or to address concerns that the
reviewers may have regarding the application.
The Program Project Grant is an assistance award for the support of a
broadly based interdisciplinary research program that has a well-
defined central research focus. It may include support for common
supporting resources (cores) required for the conduct of the component
research projects. Interrelationships between component projects are
expected to result in a greater contribution to the program goals than
if each project were pursued separately.
Receipt dates for PO1 applications are June 1 and October 1 of each
year. NIEHS will not accept P01 applications for the February NIH
application receipt date.
