Personnel Costs

Individuals designing, directing, and implementing the research education program may request salary and fringe benefits appropriate for the person months devoted to the program. Salaries requested may not exceed the levels commensurate with the institution's policy for similar positions and may not exceed the congressionally mandated cap. (If mentoring interactions and other activities with participants are considered a regular part of an individual's academic duties, then any costs associated with the mentoring and other interactions with participants are not allowable costs from grant funds). Support towards the salary of an administrative coordinator(s) and/or evaluator(s) may be requested up to $5,000 annually. As the activities associated with this FOA are considered a regular part of an academician's activities, salary for mentoring faculty for the academic year or the summer is not allowed.

Other Program-Related Expenses

These expenses must be justified as specifically required by the proposed program and must not duplicate items generally available at the applicant institution.

Personnel Costs

Clarification on personnel costs from PAR-17-221 are as follows. As the activities associated with this FOA, including the design and implementation of the program, are considered a regular part of an academician's activities, salary for faculty, including the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) (PD(s)/PI(s)), is not allowed for the academic year or the summer. Support towards the salary of a non-faculty administrative coordinator(s) and/or evaluator(s) may be requested up to $5,000 annually. This total of $5,000 is the only personnel cost allowed by this FOA which is focused on providing support for student participants.

Other Program-Related Expenses

NIBIB will provide up to $5,000/year annually for PD(s)/PI(s) to travel to conferences on STEM education, specifically with the goal of disseminating outcomes of the ESTEEMED program and to interact with similar educational programs leaders. Other program-related expenses will be provided for unique materials and resources that are specifically required by the proposed program, and not for items generally expected to be available at the applicant institution (such as printing paper or computers). These can include costs related to workshops/seminar, tutors, publications, outreach, outside evaluator/consultants, program-specific material and supplies, and must be appropriate for the goals and size of the program.
