NIH-NSF BIOENGINEERING AND BIOINFORMATICS SUMMER INSTITUTES PROGRAM (BBSI) RELEASE DATE: April 3, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-EB-02-003 (Notice superceded by NOT-EB-05-008) National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (http://www.nibib.nih.gov/) National Human Genome Research Institute (https://www.genome.gov/) National Science Foundation (http://www.nsf.gov) The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health NIH) have identified bioengineering and bioinformatics as essential multi-disciplinary research areas for the 21st century. The agencies are collaborating on an important high-profile effort to meet the anticipated bioengineering and bioinformatics human resource needs. As described in NSF Program Solicitation NSF-02-019, the NSF and NIH will make joint awards to develop and conduct ten-week "Summer Institutes" aimed at providing upper-level undergraduate and lower- level graduate students majoring in the biological, computational, engineering, mathematics, or physical sciences with well-planned, inter-disciplinary bioengineering or bioinformatics research and education experiences. The objective of this effort is to increase the number of young people considering careers in bioengineering and bioinformatics at the graduate level and beyond. For the purpose of this Program Solicitation, bioengineering and bioinformatics are considered in the broadest sense - the application of engineering, physical or computational sciences to address biomedical problems. Innovative applications are welcome in all related areas. Detailed information about this program can be obtained on the Internet at http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?nsf02109 or by contacting: Sohi Rastegar, Ph.D. Program Director, ENG/EEC Division of Engineering Education and Centers National Science Foundation E-mail address: srastega@nsf.gov.
