Purpose

Purpose

The Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases (KUH) within the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is seeking input on potential programmatic changes to the Institutional Network Award program solicited by NOFOs PAR-20-220 and PAR-23-248

Background

In 2020, NIDDK/KUH launched the Institutional Network Award (U2C-TL1) program to reshape institutional training supported by the Division.  The overarching goals of the program are to cultivate an integrated cohort of trainees and provide them the necessary resources and professional networks to succeed in their desired biomedical careers. Successful programs optimize the trainee environment to promote rigorous research, apply interdisciplinary approaches to research questions, and utilize principles of team science to further trainee leadership and problem-solving skills.

The program is supported by two components—a U2C component that provides resources for professional development, networking, and program administration, and a TL1 component that provides trainee support.  To enhance the development of a trainee cohort, only one application is accepted per institution, and it is strongly encouraged to include multiple institutions if it enhances the training environment and experience.

While it is early in the life of the program, NIDDK/KUH is interested in soliciting feedback on the program that might inform programmatic changes to improve the trainee experience and subsequently contribute to a diverse research workforce focused on KUH mission areas.  We are particularly interested in the perspectives of trainees across career stages and strongly encourage you to submit a response.

Information Requested

NIDDK/KUH is interested in soliciting comments and opinions that address the following  regarding support for institutional training:

  • The strengths and opportunities of the current Institutional Network Award program.
  • The limitations and challenges of the current Institutional Network Award program.
  • Potential improvements to the  current Institutional Network Award program.
