NOTICE OF LIMITED COMPETITION FOR COMPETING APPLICATIONS: NIDDK AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDY OF KIDNEY DISEASE (AASK) COHORT STUDY RELEASE DATE: November 8, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-DK-02-012 National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) (http://www.niddk.nih.gov) The NIDDK is requesting competing applications from the participating centers in the African American Study of Kidney Disease (AASK), which was competed in 1994. This initiative is to support a prospective, observational study that will be an extension of the AASK clinical trial. AASK is a randomized multicenter clinical trial to investigate whether a specific class of anti- hypertensive drugs (beta-adrenergic blockers, calcium channel blockers, or angiotension converting enzyme inhibitors) and/or the level of blood pressure control (MAP of 102-107 mmHg or 92 mmHg) will influence the progression of hypertensive kidney disease in African Americans. The existing AASK Clinical Centers and Data Coordinating Center possesses the leadership, organization, infrastructure, staffing and study population base to address the important objectives of the Cohort Study. The AASK Cohort Study will investigate the environmental, socioeconomic, genetic, physiologic, and other co-morbid factors that influence the progression of kidney disease in a well- characterized cohort of African Americans with hypertensive kidney disease. NIDDK staff will contact the current grantees directly regarding application procedures and format.
