Purpose

The National Institute of Dental and Cranofacial Research intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for research on Dental Practice-Based Research..
The NIDCR intends to continue support for research conducted within a national Dental Practice-Based Research Network (DPBRN) by publishing two companion Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). One FOA will solicit applications for the national DPBRN Coordinating Center (U01), and a separate companion FOA will solicit applications for the Administrative and Resource Center (U19) led by a National Network Director or Directors. The potential awards will support the infrastructure for and implementation of multiple observational studies and clinical trials.
This FOA will utilize the U01 activity code. This Notice is provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive applications. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
The FOA is expected to be published in January/February 2018 with an expected application due date in May 2018

This FOA will utilize the U01 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of Dental Practice-Based Research to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.

In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in dental, oral, and craniofacial researchwill be encouraged and these investigators should also begin considering applying for this application.

Among the areas of research encouraged in this initiative are {SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES} research examining the mechanisms that underlie the effects of dental, oral, and craniofacial diseases and conditions, as well as research designed to improve the translation of existing knowledge of strategies for the prevention and treatment of dental, oral, and craniofacial diseases and conditions ?.This Notice encourages investigators with expertise in and insights about research operations, data management, and biostatistics in multi-site settings to begin to consider applying for this FOA.
Practice-based research networks can generate important and timely information to guide the delivery of health care and improve patient outcomes. A DPBRN is a unique venue in which to conduct clinical research. It provides dental practitioners with an opportunity to propose or participate in research studies, conducted in participating dental offices with consenting patients. DPBRN studies draw on the experience and insight of practicing clinicians to help identify and frame research questions, which typically address issues faced by dental practitioners in the daily care of their patients. Because research is conducted in the real-world environment of dental practice, results have the potential to be readily accepted and adopted by practitioners and translated into daily practice. DPBRNs can support a variety of clinical studies to help expand and strengthen the profession’s evidence base and further refine care.

The planned U01 FOA will solicit applications for a national Coordinating Center to support a national clinical research network infrastructure and the conduct of multiple national oral health clinical studies, including clinical trials, during the project period. The role of the national Coordinating Center will be to centralize and harmonize study operations, data management, and biostatistical support, to facilitate rapid development and implementation of oral health studies conducted in the national DPBRN. Further, the national Coordinating Center will provide scientific and operational support for investigators conducting studies within the national DPBRN.

The national Coordinating Center will have both scientific and administrative functions and will work in close collaboration with the national DPBRN Administrative and Resource Center (U19).

Intent to publish a separate FOA for the national DPBRN Administrative and Resource Center (U19) is described in a separate Notice for National Dental Practice-Based Research Network: Administrative and Resource Center (NOT-DE-18-003). The PD/PI for an application in response to this FOA may not be the PD/PI for the companion application in response to the national DPBRN Administrative and Resource Center FOA.
