STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY OF MEMBRANE PROTEINS (PA-99-004) - ADDENDUM Release Date: October 12, 2000 NOTICE: DA-01-004 National Institute on Drug Abuse This notice is an addendum to program announcement PA-99-004, which was released in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts on October 16, 1998. This PA supports work leading to atomic level resolution of membrane proteins. This addendum adds the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as a participant in this program announcement. The NIDA is interested in furthering the understanding of the structure of various membrane receptors and transporters, including the following: cannabinoid CB1 and CB2, orphanin (ORL1), vanilloid (VR1), opioid mu, delta, and kappa, GABAa, neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine subtypes (nAChRs), dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine transporters, dopamine and serotonin subtype receptors, N-methyl-D- aspartate (NMDA) subtypes, group II metabotropic glutamate (mGluR) subtypes, and tachykinin (NK) subtypes. Using the mechanisms available under PA-99-004, applicants are encouraged to pursue techniques designed to express, solubilize, purify, and stabilize these receptors and transporters, and to obtain single particles, two dimensional, or even three dimensional crystals for electron microscopy and cryo-microscopy, and diffraction studies.
