National Cancer Institute (NCI)
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) as a Request for Applications (RFA) that will invite applications from institutions who propose research training programs to strengthen capacity to conduct global cancer research. The overarching goal of this research training program is to provide investigators and health professionals with the scientific expertise, mentorship, and leadership skills needed to conduct innovative and collaborative global research projects that will contribute to the advancement of basic, clinical, translational, and population-based cancer research. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants time to develop responsive projects and meaningful collaborations.
The NOFO is expected to be published in the early part of the 2025 calendar year with three expected application due dates in summer of 2025, 2026 and 2027 respectively.
The NOFO will utilize the U2R activity code, which is an NIH cooperative agreement mechanism for international research training. Details of the planned NOFO are provided below.
Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. By 2040, the number of new cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 29.9 million and the number of cancer-related deaths to 15.3 million. Most cancer worldwide occurs in and low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Over 50% of incident cancers and 70% of cancer deaths occur in these settings and this proportion is increasing. Research in these settings provides opportunities to address the global burden, generate new knowledge and approaches, and inform efforts to address inequities across diverse settings. The primary drivers of these disparities – environmental and behavioral exposures, inadequate prevention and early detection, presence of comorbidities, and limited access to diagnosis and treatment services – also underlie the high cancer-related morbidity and mortality experienced by some population groups in high-income countries.
In this initiative, NCI continues its institutional training program to support global cancer research. This program is designed to strengthen the global cancer research community through support of training programs built upon preexisting, high-quality cancer research and training infrastructure and strong institutional partnerships
Principal Investigators (PIs) and contact PIs will be either from a U.S.-based institution or an institution based in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC). LMICs are defined by the World Bank classification system according to Gross National Income (GNI) per capita as low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income (http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-classifications/country-and-lending-groups).
PIs should demonstrate prior or ongoing programs to develop cancer research capacity indicating their commitment to developing research workforce in the LMICs and in the US for global oncology research. NCI strongly encourages cross-country and cross-regional collaborations.
