The office of HIV and AIDS Malignancy (OHAM) at NCI is planning to issue a new Notice of Funding Opportunity announcement (NOFO) to solicit applications from eligible institutions of higher educations for specialized centers to conduct research on malignancies in people with HIV in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and to support early- and mid-career investigators from the United States (U.S.) and LMICs interested in malignancies in people with HIV. The NOFO (RFA) will use a U54 mechanism and it will be Clinical Trials Optional.
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
The NOFO will encourage research projects in basic, translational, clinical, and implementation science.
Applicants should propose a comprehensive research program that address questions in one topic by proposing up to two research projects, each focusing on relevant, complementary and synergistic areas of HIV and cancer research that together will have an impact people with malignancies and HIV in LMICs and the U.S.
Each center will be able to propose an Administrative Core (required), Developmental Core (required) and optional shared resource cores needed to support the research projects.
The NOFO will allow mechanistic studies that may meet the NIH definition of a clinical trial (NIHs Definition of a Clinical Trial) and implementation trials.
Eligibility:
This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of HIV Associated Malignancy Research to begin to consider applying for this new NOFO. In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in HIV Associated malignancies will be encouraged.
Each application will be partnerships between U.S. investigators and investigators from one or two LMICs. These partnerships will be referred to as HIV Associated Malignancy Research Centers (HAMRCs).
The research projects are to be developed and conducted as joint efforts between early- or mid-career investigators from the U.S. and LMICs and must address the theme of the center.
Each HAMRC will be able to request up to $800,000 Direct Costs if partnering with two LMICs and $700,000 if partnering with LMIC per year for five years.
