Purpose

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to continue its support for the Barrett's Esophagus Translational Research Network (BETRNet). Through this Notice, the NCI announces the plans to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the BETRNet Coordinating Center. This Coordinating Center (to be supported by a U24 cooperative agreement) will coordinate trans-network activities of a group of U54-supported BETRNet Research Centers (to be funded under a separate FOA, announced by the companion Notice of Intent to Publish, NOT-CA-16-012).

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop responsive applications.

The FOA is expected to be published in early 2016 with an expected application due date in late Spring 2016.

This FOA will utilize the U24 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

The BETRNet is an NCI program established to address the rising incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) in the United States and to energize the field of EA research. Specifically, the program seeks a better understanding of EA biology and its precursor lesion, Barrett’s esophagus (BE), for translation into management and prevention measures, through multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional collaborations.

The BETRNet Coordinating Center, announced by this Notice, will be responsible for coordinating the network activities and facilitating interactions across the BETRNet program in close collaborations with BETRNet Research Centers and the NCI. For example, the Coordinating Center will be expected to organize and/or provide logistic support for trans-Network activities (Steering Committee meeting, webinars, workshops, etc.); coordinate the process of formulating collaborative cross-BETRNet pilot projects; and ensure timely sharing of specimens, data, and resources across the network. The Coordinating Center will play an important role in maintaining and expanding the Patient Registry-Virtual Repository for collaborative studies within and outside BETRNet.

The announced FOA will be open to all qualified applicants who can establish and lead a Center that can provide the framework for organizing and coordinating BETRNet and facilitating transdisciplinary research.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
