Purpose

The National Cancer Institute intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit cooperative agreement research (U01) grant applications for Physical Sciences Oncology Projects (PS-OP). The projects should integrate the physical sciences and engineering with cancer research to address fundamental questions in cancer that advance our current understanding of the disease. The initiative is expected to further develop emerging fields of study in cancer that are based on physical sciences principles and approaches. The PS-OPs will be integrated with the Physical Sciences Oncology Centers (PS-OC) to form the broader Physical Sciences Oncology Network (PS-ON).

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in Fall 2014 with an expected application due date in February 2015.

This FOA will utilize the U01 (Research Project-Cooperative Agreements) activity code to support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by a small team of investigators with combined expertise in the physical sciences and engineering (e.g., engineers, physicists, mathematicians, chemists, computer scientists) and cancer research (e.g., cancer biology, oncology, pathology). Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators and teams with complementary expertise in the physical sciences and cancer research, and other life sciences to consider applying for this new FOA for Physical Sciences Oncology Projects (PS-OP).

Each applicant team will be required to propose a project that addresses a fundamental question(s) in cancer research from a physical sciences perspective. Example thematic areas of interest include but are not limited to (1) the physical dynamics of cancer and (2) spatio-temporal organization and information transfer in cancer.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
