Notice of Limited Competition for Competing Continuation Applications: Breast Cancer Family Registries (B-CFR)

Notice Number: NOT-CA-06-001

Key Dates
Release Date: November 3, 2005

Issued by
National Cancer Institute (NCI), (http://www.nci.nih.gov)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is requesting competing renewal U01 cooperative agreement applications from the current awardees for the Breast Cancer Family Registries (B-CFR) initiative.

The B-CFR has developed a unique, comprehensive, and high quality biospecimen resource for use in genetic and molecular epidemiology studies of breast cancer in humans. This new funding opportunity is intended to provide current B-CFR grantees with financial support that should allow them to maintain and re-structure the core activities of this research infrastructure in ways that should increase its use and exploitation by interdisciplinary teams of researchers, including investigators from the B-CFR participating institutions and qualified scientists from the research community at large. The proposed maintenance elements and re-structured platforms will be anchored to a broad research agenda, addressing current identified priorities of breast cancer research within the framework of population sciences. Major goals will be as follows: (1) to continue the development of a model consortial research infrastructure for the direct implementation of collaborative, interdisciplinary, and translational research studies in the genetic epidemiology of breast, ovarian, and related cancers; (2) to continue the identification and follow up a diverse cohort of individuals spanning the whole spectrum of cancer risk and their families; (3) to identify, through molecular, epidemiological and behavioral characterizations, diverse genetically susceptible populations that could benefit from enrollment in preventive and therapeutic interventions; (4) to develop an adaptative and evolving informatics model to support ongoing and future research consortia; and (5) to foster collaborative investigator‑initiated research among the B-CFR investigators and with the scientific community at large by providing access to the established infrastructure to all interested and qualified collaborators who are willing to develop an original proposal for collaborative research studies, undergo the required peer review, and return the data produced by such projects to the B-CFR central data base (so that they could be accessible to the scientific community at large for further studies). Continued support is also intended to: expedite research on genetic and environmental modifiers of risk for breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility genes, especially for genes at high and intermediate penetrance, where questions are addressed that require the use of large and highly characterized populations; contribute to the characterization of low penetrance candidate genes through collaboration with other existing consortia (i.e., cohort consortium); rapidly implement pilot and feasibility studies, thereby avoiding expenditures of much larger resources; focus on the translation of these results to the affected and at-risk populations; and create the infrastructure for a vigorous behavioral research agenda related to breast cancer uniquely focused on the familial unit. Finally, the prospective nature of the B-CFR will give the investigators and their collaborators greater flexibility to investigate emerging questions related to new risk factors as well as to integrate new molecular technologies and approaches (e.g., proteomics, nanotechnology, etc.) into their studies.

The B-CFR will give high priority to collaborations with other NIH-sponsored epidemiology research programs and other relevant cancer research entities in order to effectively develop and implement a clinically relevant, interdisciplinary, and cost-efficient research program.

NCI will contact the current awardees directly regarding application procedures and format.
