Notice Number: NOT-CA-05-013

Key Dates
Release Date: February 17, 2005

Issued by
National Cancer Institute (NCI), (http://www.cancer.gov/)

The purpose of this notice is to inform the research community that the National Cancer Institute has revised the Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs) Guidelines. The interim version announced in this notice replaces any previous guidelines.

SPOREs support translational cancer research focused on a single organ site or related group of organ sites. The purpose of the SPORE program is to move basic research discoveries into human applications and/or determine the underlying biological mechanism responsible for a clinical or population observation. SPOREs include multiple projects, cores, and two developmental programs aimed at impacting upon the disease through improved means of prevention, early detection, diagnosis, or treatment. The interim Guidelines provide further details on the objectives of the SPORE program, eligibility criteria and requirements, application preparation and submission procedures, review criteria and procedures, and contacts for further information.

Applications for SPOREs in a particular organ site(s) are solicited through an annual program announcement. Applications for a particular organ site will only be accepted on a receipt date published within the program announcement. Solicitations for particular organ site applications will differ from year to year. Applicants are encouraged to contact program staff about future receipt dates.

These interim SPORE Guidelines are effective with applications submitted for the May 23, 2004 receipt date. The NCI will no longer accept applications in response to previous Guidelines dated June, 2001 (or earlier).

The interim SPORE Guidelines are available at http://spores.nci.nih.gov
